Welcome back to the circle, My Sistren!

In My Workshop:

Spinning for the Tour de Fleece. It's an Honor thing for a spinster.

Tales of the Stepfords:

All dawgs go to heaven. Period. Anyone who says different is just proving that they have never experienced a dawg. We can only feel sadness for them.

Lure of the Wheel:

Treadle wheels at last! A discussion of how the flier, bobbin, and treadle changed spinning and the spinning wheels. Mainly, we are discussing how the Great or Walking Wheel became the Saxony wheel.

A Saxony wheel:

A Castle wheel:

Friction-Drive wheel/Between-the-knees wheel:

Welcome back to the circle, My Sistren!

In My Workshop:

Working on a very damaged Great Wheel

Tales of the Stepfords:

"Why would anyone do that?" and "I don't have the time." Let's get serious about lame excuses, shall we?

 spinning_diff

Lure of the Wheel:

Why a treadle at all? How spindle wheels have been adapted over the centuries, including the Spinning Jenny, the thread-wrapped drive wheels, and some great wheels that had to live in a barn.

A Spinning Jenny in western Europe:

A drive wheel with no rim and string or fabric around the outside to support the drive band:

Welcome back to the circle, My Sistren!

In My Workshop: Teaching a pack sister to drop spindle

Why even bother when there are some perfectly good wheels out there?  Consider drop spindling the gateway drug to true wheel addiction. Or consider it a painful way to spend an afternoon.

IMG00406.jpg

Tales of the Stepfords:

Why do medical Stepfords consider spinning a form of mental illness? Why do sisters of the Pack consider medical Stepfords a form of human tragedy?

Lure of the Wheel:

It's time to stop hinting and just talk outright about the drop spindle, My Sistren. I know this will make many of you cover your ears. But it's useful information, all the same.

Here's a great discussion of weights in spindles. I only disagree with a little bit of it. For me, that's pretty good. And Golding makes some gorgeous spindles, when you are ready for them.

Here's where you can find good starter spindles--both medium and heavy/plying weights. Maine Woods Yarns on Etsy. They also have some nice, slightly more coarse fibers for you to learn on, so you drop the spindle a little bit less often. From there, you can explore other sellers of fiber on Etsy.

Remember that Louet and Schacht and Ashford all make perfectly good starter spindles for about $12 each. You don't need to spend a lot!

I am also partial to this sister's lightweight spindles: YorkieSlave on Etsy.

Welcome back to the circle, My Sistren!

In My Workshop: Playing with the Painted Lady of Saxony Wheels

IMAG0188.jpg

That's my little Saxony from Eastern Europe, almost back up to spin.

This segment is liberally mixed (I am a Liberal, so that's no accident...have I mentioned that there are no accidents?) with the Lure of the Wheel segment. Hang on tight!

Tales of the Stepfords:

In which we discuss--totally out of order--the pain of dealing with a Stepford when you buy an old wheel and also we briefly consider who is sponsoring this podcast and what "play" means.

Lure of the Wheel:

My thanks to Miss CoggieTM of the High Fiber Podcast for an actual on-the-air review. Yes, Sister, we are a little different around here. Thank you kindly!

A bit about the Majacraft wheels, fiber for use on a Great Wheel, and a hint about why drop spindling really is a handy skill to possess.

Conditioning hemp to make a drive band.

Lemon oil and denatured alcohol in refinishing wheels.

Getting the drive band on a double drive wheel.

In which a yearling ex-momma GSD joins our pack and encourages the Rocket Scientist GSD to commit acts of stage-violence.

The Holy Books of the Pack:

Yes, My Sistren, we have cause for much joy today. We have reached spin on my first restored wheel--a Walking Wheel, in fact. Here she is, oiled, cleaned, new drive band, new spindle head. She spins true and turning that wheel sends joy all through me:

IMAG0152.jpg

Here she is as I first had her:

Bessie

See wacky angle on the spindle's axle, the missing spindle, the dried wood, and all the dust? And no drive band, a'course!

Episode One: Gathering

I write in the Dark of the Moon, for you all to enjoy in the Shining Time of the Moon. Welcome to the Pack, Sister. Here we run freely and with joy, Wild Sistren and Feral Sistren, all with the same desire burning like warm embers within our hearts:

To pursue the Wild Spinning Wheel.

Come sit by the Fire in comfort as we share the segments and the love:

  • Lure (Lore) of the Wheel
  • Stepford Tales
  • Dawg Stories
  • In the Workshop

Here we embrace all belief, all faith, all sistren, the elusive brethren of the wheel, all the makers and creators, regardless of background, whether Wild or Feral. This particular Pack is devoted to the pursuit of the Spinning Wheel, but we welcome sistren and brethren of other Packs, as long as their creations and crafts serve the Great Pack.

I am your Host and Founder of this Pack, Spinning Jenny--your Wild Sister, Spinster, Developing Crone. I speak honestly about my Sisterhood, but we don't really do explicit sexual content because what's that got to do with spinning wheels?

Remember to send love to the Sistren, Children, and Brethren in Cairo. The Pack is World-wide, and when any part suffers, the entire Pack suffers, regardless of race, politics, or creed.

Here's my source for the Pack's Prayer, which  I chant briefly at the end of the opening episode:

Woa Woa from Medicine Wheel by Robert Gass.

Come share the love and sisterhood, and...

Keep Your Wild Heart Strong!
